JOB TITLE: Firefighter

DEPARTMENT: Public Safety - Fire Services Division

JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of this job is to perform specialized work functions in preparing for and responding to fire and medical emergency calls and in providing general support within the Fire Department. Duties and responsibilities include maintaining readiness for emergency call response; responding to fire and related emergency calls when dispatched; educating staff and public on fire safety and prevention; performing other tasks related to County and Fire Department activities.

MAJOR DUTIES:

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Responds to emergency calls involving fire, hazardous materials, natural and manmade disasters, rescue, and other critical incidents;
• Implements actions necessary to save lives and property; assists with emergency medical treatment and patient care;
• Assist in maintaining scene safety for all personnel and bystanders;
• May serve as commanding officer until relieved by a senior officer;
• Assists in maintaining scene to correct life-threatening situations and/or extricate patients;
• Conducts triage of multiple injury accidents, and administers emergency medical treatment within scope of practice until EMS personnel arrives;
• Assists Paramedics with advanced skills, including intubation, preparing drugs to be administered through I.V. or I.M., and setting up monitors and oxygen for patients;
• Maintains a state of readiness for emergency response apparatus and equipment;
• Inspects apparatus and equipment to ensure that it is in proper working order; performs routine maintenance of equipment as assigned;
• Washes and cleans equipment on a regular basis;
• Reports any equipment malfunction or missing supplies immediately to the Officer in Charge;
• Maintains fire hydrants, test hose, pumps, and perform preventative maintenance on all apparatus;
• Maintains station and grounds, ensures cleanliness of station, grounds, and living quarters;
• Participates in continuing study, training, and drill activities;
• Gains familiarity with geography of the area; learns roads and alternative routes to populated areas; learns fire hydrant locations;
• Maintains a comprehensive current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures; maintains an awareness of new techniques, equipment, medications, trends, and advances in the profession;
• May assist with public relations duties and assist with instruction of emergency medical treatment, fire safety and prevention techniques;
• Conducts tours of the fire house and demonstrates firefighting equipment;
• Communicates via telephone, two-way radio, and or others; provides information and assistance to appropriate personnel; responds to request for service and assistance; communicates effectively and coherently over radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications;
• Cooperates with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and their officers or representatives when activities are related to investigations within county jurisdiction;
• Operates emergency vehicles responding to and from alarms; performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner in various conditions, and ensures each member of the shift performs the same;
• Performs administrative work including preparing and/or reviews various forms, reports, correspondence, daily reports, logbooks, and other documents;
• Completes required reports and paperwork for incidents occurring during an assigned shift;
• Determines equipment and personnel needed at fire and emergency scenes;
• Performs other duties as assigned by Command Staff;

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

• Basic & Advanced emergency medical life-sustaining techniques, including cardiac care, trauma and shock care, ventilation, and other CPR techniques.

• Hazardous materials strategies, tactics, and equipment

• National Incident Management System

• Symptoms of illnesses and traumatic injuries

• Firefighting principles and techniques.

• Local geography, streets, and hospitals

• Department policy, rules, and regulations

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include state statutes and laws, federal laws, county ordinances, department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange administrative, firefighting and emergency medical information. Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must be able to lift light or heavy objects, use tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguish between shades of color.

Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have the ability to use hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have average levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a vehicle, outside or in an office environment. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, and dirt, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective devices.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: The employee works under the general and technical supervision of the Fire Services Division Chief; reports to Fire Services Lieutenant and Superiors. This position typically does not have managerial responsibilities, however, utilizing NIMS the individual could be part of the command structure on any given incident scene.

Minimum Qualifications of Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

Georgia Firefighters Standards and Training Council

Firefighter Certification Requirement: O.C.G.A 25-4-8

• At least 18 years of age;

• Not have been convicted of a felony within 10 years prior to employment;

• Have good moral character as determined by investigation under procedure approved by the Council;

• Be fingerprinted and a search made of local, state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record;

• Be in good physical condition as determined by a medical examination and successfully pass the minimum physical agility requirements as established by the Council;

• Possess a high school diploma or general education development equivalency.

• Must have an acceptable driving record.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (50 plus pounds). Must be able to use body members to work, move, or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Must be able to coordinate hands, feet, and eyes in using equipment.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, pathogenic substances, animal attacks, or animal bites.
